Understanding A Preschool Child

The preschool years of a child are the prime learning years of life. The preschool child, generally speaking refers to a child which has not reached school age, it includes toddlers but not infants. Preschoolers are in a world which is challenging to both them and their parents. During this years, children are curious, active, eager and independent. This is also where they are so stubborn, obstinate and clinging.

Children have their own needs, newborn babies and children under one year old needs physical and emotional nurturing, they need sleep, food and human contact. Preschoolers' needs on the other hand, mostly require psychological strategies. Throughout their five years, they struggle to become independent human beings, they feel they have their own hold of their lives.

Childhood is naturally full of troubles, conflicts and problems that is why parents should prepare and accept that reality. They must put in mind that parents and children differs in how they view the situation. For instance, children's behavior is a problem to parents, but children would not see it as a problem, they simply have not yet learned more appropriate self-controlled ways of satisfying themeselves. Parents should understand that they operate a timetable which is so different from their child and that every child is unique. They have different attitudes, characteristic and behavior. So, parents, before you label your child ask yourselves a million question.

The number one task a parent should handle is teaching their preschool child the appropriate behavior on a level that they can understand. Parents must model the kind of behavior they want their child to learn and acquire. They must also communicate their values in ways that make the values as important for their children as they are for themeselves. When dealing with tantrums and temper, parents do not only restore peace and order in their home but as well as teaching the child how to handle frustration and anger in an appropriate manner. The parents must remember always that their child is unique, they must accept the inborn personality and temperament of their child. They should help them develop a sense of resposibilty for their actions, create a loving and safe environment, teach them decision making and problem solving skills and show them how to handle mistakes as challenges rather than as threats. It is also necessary that parents become more disciplined before they implement discipline to their child. Parental behavior must change before their children's behavior is most likely to change.
