Easy To Follow
Of course it almost goes without saying, any tuition for any subject needs to flow in a logical way and be simple to take in. First steps need to be clearly described, and build into more ideas. Musical theory has it's place, but the new guitarist is literally champing at the bit - he would like to play! This then should be the first action, presenting the basic steps that can be practised straight away. After all, a thorough knowledge of the first concepts should bring big benefits later on in the instruction.
Notation against Tablature
For years, classical guitarists learned to read music and used written notes when performing or creating new material. Inevitably, this signifies a progress that is often perceived as too slow in today's fast moving world. In the 60s, blues guitar expert Stephan Grossman and some contemporaries, put together a method of notation that represented the frets and strings of the guitar. This short hand 'musical' tablature was easily understood and is an effective aid for learning blues guitar, for example. A grid of 6 strings is numbered from the bottom bass string (1) to the top E string (6) and a number written on a string indicates which fret the finger should be placed above. A short line at the side of the number denotes that the thumb or finger is employed.
Image Presentation - What Should Be Displayed On The Screen
There could be many variations on this theme, but we can identify desirable elements of this vital visual aid to guitar tuition. The new guitarist should be made aware right at the start what the object of that lesson is. If we are learning a whole song, then that song should be be performed in precisely the same way as the detailed instruction shows throughout the video. Before the main instruction, any difficult techniques can be discussed and valuable tips given. A close up of each hand is priceless, and would be best shown at different times. Chord charts and tab may be overlaid on the screen, so that students can associate finger movements with the notation. This approach is very effective for learning finger picking blues guitar.
More Desirable Attributes
When learning a song, it's very useful to have lyrics at hand and a short discussion covering singing while playing at the same time. You might think this is obvious, but it's really tricky for a beginner guitarist to do both together! The full tablature and lyrics might be supplied as a seperate Word or PDF file, which could be printed and referred to at the student's leisure. An MP3 audio file could also be provided, in this way the instruction could be accessed casually at all times. However, if the video file is in a suitable format, it could be viewed using an iPhone or iPad.
