How To Enjoy The Sauna In Summer

Each year many are concerned with the issue of how to enjoy the sauna in summer. Dehydration, heart problems and of course pregnancy raise questions. The advantages and disadvantages open up debate.

Saunas evolved from Finnish culture. The ancient language defined them as snow pit dwellings dug out of a sloping hill to protect from harsh winters. These saunas were designed with fireplaces which heated piles of stones. Throwing water on the stones created steam increasing the temperature. This made it comfortable enough so clothing could be removed.

Later saunas evolved as smoke saunas inside small cabins and or cottages. Piles of rocks were heated by burning large piles of wood for 6 hours or more. After the smoke was released the heat provided warmth for approximately 12 hours. This method is still practiced in Finnish culture.

Traditionally families bathed together. The perspiration caused by heat opened and cleansed pores. Eventually leafy birch branches were added. They gently slapped themselves with the branches to stimulate their skin. This also exfoliated dead skin cells. Because water was readily available they were also used as birthing chambers and a place to prepare the dead for burial. Soon the bathhouse became a place for public gathering.

When the Finnish migrated they brought with them not only their traditions but also designs of their saunas. These were shared with other cultures. They had embraced the sauna as part of their daily life.

Today its evolution from snow pits to spa resorts, and health clubs still recognize the saunas ability to renew the spirit and promote health and wellness. Cooler regions can appreciate this activity year-round. However, in hotter regions of the world, enjoying the sauna in summer caused concern.

As far as advantages and disadvantage are concerned, dehydration is a worry no matter the season. Many facilities publish the danger of this in their regulations. Facilities monitor the duration of each session for client safety.

Saunas offer many therapeutic advantages. After lowering stress levels, blood pressure, and other stress related complaints are noticeably improved. This may include poor circulation, and toxins build up in kidneys, liver, and skin. Clients have also reported freedom from digestive problems, and sinus conditions.

Perspiration helps with detoxification. The rise in the body's core temperature, and soothing affects of heat, improve circulation. Stress levels are lowered so healing begins through relaxation. This allows organs to flush out waste as they are less resistant when resting.

As for the disadvantages of summer, clients should practice caution. Obeying rules and regulations are also for the protection of the client. Clients who are pregnant and those with cardiovascular disease should consult a health care provider before indulging in this activity.

Some clients may want to extend the relaxing affects of their session. This can be dangerous and lead to heat stroke. Those who are prone to dehydration may need to reduce session duration and frequency. Clients who suffer from sinusitis and allergies can aggravate these conditions in dry heat. Understanding how to enjoy the sauna in summer should be discussed with a primary care physician before beginning the activity.
