How People Are Making Money From Abandoned Storage Buildings

If going to auctions in mini storage buildings seems like the latest get-rich-quick fad because there are people making plenty of money off of doing so. There are television shows popping up that show the inner workings of these facilities and the way in which some people stop paying for their space or just abandon their stuff at the end of their contract. The owners of the facilities roll up doors and auction off everything inside. This gives the owners a chance to recoup some of their losses, it gets rid of the stuff so they can rent the space to someone else and it gives the average person a chance to make a killing on some cool stuff. If you are thinking about heading to one of these auctions, there are a few things you should know. In addition to being prepared to get some great deals, you should also understand how the process works.

One of the things that are driving the issue with the facilities is the fact that the economy is so bad. People might have rented one when things were going better for them or they might have rented one when they lost a job or had to move for a job-related reason. Thinking things would pick up, they put some of their stuff in a facility temporarily. When things did not turn around, they were forced to abandon payments or did not have the money to transport their stuff to a new location when they moved for employment. The end result is their stuff is left abandoned in the facility.

If you hear about an auction, you should absolutely go. It is usually free to attend and though you might not find a single thing of interest, you might make a killing. The owners of the facilities are eager to get the stuff off of their property. They are hoping to recoup some of their losses, but the important thing to them is getting the facility rented again, so they need it cleaned out. Best of all, they have no emotional attachment to the stuff like people seeing their own belongings, so they really do not care how much it sells for.

Even if you are not personally interested in items, you can buy them cheap and resell them online. If you see a great deal on something you think would be fairly popular, go ahead and buy it. You can stick it on an online auction the next day and possibly make a profit.

You could also consider upgrading the item. Some people call this upcycling. If you get something really cheap, but it lacks character or needs a little sprucing up, put your own elbow grease into it and turn it into something special. When you are finished, you might be able to sell it for a hefty profit. Even better, you might realize once the item is fixed up, you do love it and it does fit into your home. Imagine getting a great piece of furniture or electronic equipment for just a couple of dollars and just by putting a few hours into it, you turn it into something great.
