Becoming a Certified Nurse for Breast Cancer

There are several types of nursing industries available nowadays, and being a nurse in the field of breast cancer is just one of them. This is considered to be a clinical specialist or a practice nurse. Educational training is more advanced than the typical nurse training, and you are going to have a more supportive job description to patients as well as families and friends of the patient. You are going to have a more teaching and management role in patient care, and there is also going to be some research skills involved. As a clinical nurse, you are going to be focusing on one specified field or industry, such as breast cancer. Oncology is the medical term for cancer and is more specialized than the basic cancer training. There are basic prep classes as well as more advanced and focused classes and training that focus on breast cancer.

The first step is applying to a school or college that is accredited. You will have to complete and pass some basic classes including theory, medical ethics, pharmacology, and other nursing classes that you will be responsible for taking. You are going to have to earn your Bachelor's degree in nursing as well before you can become trained in oncology.

You are going to have to take the state exam known as the National Council Licensure Exam which is a combination of basic competency. This test must be taken in the state you plan on practicing and it must be passed as well. Before you can become licensed this is needed. This test is going to be given by the National Council of State Board of Nursing.

You will then have to take a graduate record exam which is another form of a competency exam that is required before getting into grad school. However, check with the school before taking this test as not all places require students to take it. The school you are interested in will tell you whether they do or don't.

Obtain reference letters and recommendation letters as well to submit with your college application. Some schools require this to be done, and some great places to go are any past professors or teachers/ Health care providers you work with can also be a great choice for getting a recommendation.

You are also going to need a personal statement explaining why you are interested in enrolling in the school and include your reasoning for wanting to be in the oncology nursing career. Breast cancer is more advanced and you may need strong emotional abilities as many women are going to be looking to you for support emotionally.

The class is going to be about 500 hours and all of these hours are required. You are going to be eligible for doing an intern to complete some of your hours. There are going to be some institutes that are not going to mandate 500 hours towards the clinical aspect, and you should look into this before getting started.

There is an Oncology Exam that you are going to need to take as you are going to need to know every aspect of oncology and how to deal with people who are suffering with breast cancer. This field is rewarding for so many people and can be a great change of career for those interested in making a difference.
