Number one on your list is cost, and let there is no doubt about it but that an in-ground pool is going to cost you a whole lot more than a prefab. Then another thing to keep in mind if you're planning on putting your home up for sale when the market picks up is that you aren't guaranteed to recoup the cost of the pool. In fact with the current glut of unsold homes, you can pretty much count on losing money, so you may want to opt for a prefab unit.
Then again the big downsides if you're considering opting for an above ground pool are the limitations in design features. In short, you're basically stuck with two choices and that's round or oval and you can also forget about an attached spa or an island. Or then again, if your plans are for a commercial pool for, say a campground, you can now have an above ground pool custom made to almost any size.
Then there's a huge difference when it comes to the time it takes to install either type because an above ground prefab can be up and filled with water in a matter of days, and even less if there's no digging involved. On the other hand, it's not at all uncommon for a built in to take months to complete, and don't forget that with all the heavy equipment activity the rest of your yard will be destroyed.
Then again with concrete swimming pools you get the actual concrete and tile which a lot of people for sure prefer. The problem here though is that these people who prefer the concrete, all too often aren't the same folks who are going to have to end up cleaning and maintaining it. Built-in pools take a lot of work to keep up while your other option has no concrete that needs to be regularly scrubbed.
In the end though, the one big positive aspect of the prefab option is that it has made the choice of having a pool installed one that so many folks couldn't make in decades past. They were quite simply priced out of the market. Today though, thanks to the people who design, manufacture, and sell above ground swimming pools, literally millions of people both young and old will have a place to cool off this summer.
