You cannot hope to be able to switch out a tire without having the proper tools for the task, so you will need to know exactly what tools are required and make sure to have them in your vehicle at all times. The two biggest tools you are going to want to have with you at all times are a car jack and a lug wrench - one for getting the tire off the ground so that you can remove it and the other for removing the lug nuts that hold it on. Though not much else is actually required for the job, there are a number of other things that you might like to have with you in this situation, like a screwdriver you can use to pry off your hubcaps or a can of penetration oil for any stubborn lug nuts.
No one should have to tell you how dangerous busy traffic is, so when the time comes where one of your tires really gives out, you will need to find a safe place to park that is a good distance away from the road. Finding a spot that is a safe distance from the road shouldn't always be too difficult, but you will also need to make sure that it is level enough to allow you to jack the vehicle straight up and not at severe incline.
If you are not cautious, you can accidently place the jack under an area of your vehicle that is not powerful enough to support the weight of the vehicle, damaging your vehicle and possibly injuring your self as a result. There are many vehicles that are marked in the specific places where you must place your jack, but if your vehicle does not have one of these marks, you need to make sure to put it under the frame and close to the wheel well of the bad tire. You will want to loosen all of the lug nuts before you actually jack up the vehicle, so get your lug wrench and do that, then jack up the car until the tire is off the ground enough for you to remove it and replace it with another.
As long as you can follow the last few steps, you should have no problem getting your new tire in place, because it literally consist of merely going through each of those steps again in a reversed order. Anyone who can manage the aforementioned task will have nothing to worry about once one of their Continental tires has to be changed.
