Tips for Writing a Successful Resume

A resume plays a very important role when seeking employment. It shows your education, special skills and past employment history. You should take careful consideration when you are doing resume writing for yourself. It will be representing who you are and why you should be hired for a job you may be applying for. If you are currently looking for work, it is important to put together your resume (if you haven't already) or update it as needed. As you are creating or updating your resume, there are a few important tips that you should follow.

Proofread your resume

There is nothing that says "do not hire me" louder than a resume with many grammar and spelling mistakes. If English wasn't your high point, or you need help editing, then find someone to look over your resume to help proofread it. You shouldn't just proofread your resume once-but twice, or perhaps three times.

Bullet points are your friend

These days, employers want to read through resumes as quickly as possible. When the economy is down, many places of employment are swamped with resumes and job applications. Instead of writing long descriptive paragraphs, get right to the point by using bullet points.

Explain how your skills could benefit the company

As you list your special skills when writing your resume, also explain how they could benefit the company to whom you are applying. Just listing that you have skills isn't enough. Let the company know why they need you.

Create a custom resume for each employer

Do not just create one standard resume. Customize the resume to the job that you are applying. Include a cover letter that is customized for the company as well. Just giving one standard resume to several different employers gives it a good chance of being overlooked.

Do not list every single past job

It is not important for a company to know where you were working at your first job. Only list the most recent jobs that you have had. If you were at the same place for the past 10-15 years, then state so. This will show how dedicated of an employee that you are.

Keep your resume one or two pages maximum

No potential employer wants to read through a long resume. If possible, keep your resume just one or two pages long. An employer wants to be able to quickly scan a resume and pick out major points of a person's potential. Only list the most vital information on a resume.

Allow someone else to review your resume

Before delivering your resume to a potential employer, allow someone else to review it first. Sometimes we don't see the mistakes in our own writing. It also helps to see your resume from a different perspective too.

By following some of these tips, you can create a successful resume. While creating a resume can be somewhat tricky, it shouldn't be absolutely difficult. A resume is a piece of paper that will represent what type of employee you could be. You want to be able to leave a positive lasting impression with a prospective employer.
