Alexa Rank Follies

I am a Judgment Broker who writes a lot. This article is my opinion on how one's Alexa rank isn't worth trying to increase.

The Alexa Internet company began Alexa in 1996, as a toolbar for web browsers named the Alexa Toolbar. It offered rankings of web site popularity, with suggestions of what site to visit next, based on where other toolbar browsers had surfed. Alexa started the Wayback Machine, and has been a pioneer in web crawling, indexing, and storage.

Alexa was a very important contributor to the infrastructure of the web, and is now owned by Amazon. In 2009, Amazon "discontinued or deprecated" the bulk of of Alexa's services for consumers. Still remaining, is the Alexa Toolbar that rates web site popularity.

What the Alexa Company did, and part of what it does now, is important. However, the Alexa ranking that shows up on maybe millions of web browser toolbars, isn't important to monitor. Google is number one (I bet you could have guessed that), Yahoo is # 4, Amazon is # 11, Comcast is number 198, most web sites are in the millions.

There are many SEO guides, pinging services, software programs, web services, and companies that offer, and can dramatically boost one's Alexa rank. However, Alexa rank does not give you any new information. The actual effect of Alexa ranking is to impress some people who are using the Alexa Toolbar.

The companies who try to sell products and services to reduce your Alexa ranking have a common advertising spiel, that Google gives a strong preference to sites with a better Alexa rank. I think Google notices web sites with content that is valuable, unique, in-depth, well-organized, and provides a real service or product.

Those with Alexa rank boosting products to sell also boast about some other alleged advantages of getting a better Alexa rank. "People will be impressed and take your site seriously. If you get under a 100,000 ranking, people will be willing to pay you to put banners on your web site." Some mention the Nielsen Ratings, as if old TV watching habits could be compared with the dynamic web.

Your Alexa ranking most affects the rank number on the (if installed) Alexa Toolbars of web users. In my opinion it is a fantasy to imagine that customers will conduct business with you when you get an Alexa rank of 150,000, however will not do business with you when your Alexa ranking is three million.

It is foolish to think that if you buy a product or pay a service to boost your ranking under 100K, you'll be paid to put banners ads on your site.

When you are at Alexa rank number 5,000, maybe people will offer to pay to place ads and banners on your web site. But, when their advertisements do not work, you will not get paid much.

When your web site's clicks are from robots, they only improve your Alexa rankings, they don't help you in any other way.

Attaining a fantastic Alexa rank by itself, has nothing to do with whether anyone clicks an advertisement. Even if a robot clicks a a banner, what counts is sales, not clicks.

The best way to get a good Alexa rank, is to ignore your Alexa ranking. Improve your web site and grow your business as much as you can. That will generate a useful Alexa rank.

When you are lucky enough to get an Alexa ranking of 1,100 by ignoring the Alexa ranking, you'll be very successful.

If you purchase your way to an Alexa rank of 900, you'll be noticed, but probably won't be successful.
